What to Wear for Fall Family Photos

Here’s the secret:

You don’t need to match.

Actually, please don’t.

The goal is to choose colors, textures and layers that complement one another so your family looks beautifully coordinated without looking like you bought everyone an outfit from the same rack.

And my single most important tip? DRESS TO MATCH YOUR HOUSE! These photographs will live in your home and on your walls for years to come. Choose timeless colors and patterns that blend seamlessly with your home.

Start With Your Fall Color Palette

Some of my favorite colors for fall family pictures are:

Cream • Oatmeal • Camel • Taupe • Chocolate

Olive • Sage • Forest Green

Burgundy • Wine • Plum • Muted Rust

Dusty Blue • Navy • Soft Denim

Choose approximately 3–4 complementary shades and weave them throughout everyone’s outfits.

For example:

Mom might wear a flowing cream dress.

Dad could wear an olive sweater with dark denim.

Your daughter could wear muted plum.

Your son could wear camel with brown corduroy.

Everything works together without actually matching.

⸻

Texture Is Your Best Friend

Fall photographs beautifully because we can use layers and texture.

Think chunky knits, linen, corduroy, suede, wool, leather, denim, flowing skirts and beautiful sweaters.

Texture adds dimension to your portraits and makes even a simple neutral wardrobe feel rich and intentional.

⸻

What Should Mom Wear for Fall Family Photos?

Start with yourself.

Choose something you feel beautiful in first. Then we’ll build everyone else’s wardrobe around you.

Flowing midi and maxi dresses photograph beautifully because they create movement and shape. Sweater dresses, fitted knits with skirts, or a great pair of jeans paired with a beautiful sweater can work just as well.

The most important thing is that your clothing makes you feel confident.

Fall Photo Outfits for Dad

Dad doesn’t need anything complicated.

A fitted sweater, Henley, textured button-down or casual jacket paired with dark denim or chinos works beautifully.

Finish with brown leather boots or shoes and you’re done.

Simple. Tailored. Timeless.

Fall Photo Outfits for Kids

For girls, I love flowing or knit dresses, textured skirts, cardigans, boots and beautiful little accessories.

For boys, think Henleys, sweaters, corduroy, chinos, overalls, dark denim and boots.

For babies, keep things soft and simple—knit rompers, one-piece outfits, sweaters, bonnets and tiny bare feet whenever Kentucky weather cooperates. Be sure the clothing actually fits the baby, oversized clothes on babies look very funny in photos.

Most importantly, let them be comfortable.

I want your children snuggling, running, exploring, laughing and playing during your family session.

That’s where the magic happens.

⸻

What NOT to Wear for Family Photos

There aren’t many hard rules, but I generally recommend avoiding:

• Neon or extremely bright colors
• Large logos or words
• Character clothing
• Very busy patterns
• Tiny stripes
• Athletic shoes
• Too much stark black
• Bright optic white
• Anything uncomfortable or overly stiff

When you’re torn between options, remember:

Simple + beautiful texture almost always wins.

The Client Closet Experience

Before you buy, or search your closet for a single thing, please view our complimentary Client Closet. We’ve curated an incredible collection of beautiful dresses, gowns, skirts, children’s pieces, and specialty wardrobe options in a wide range of sizes, colors, and styles, all chosen specifically because they photograph beautifully. You’re welcome to come into the studio before your session, try things on, and find something that makes you feel amazing.

For outdoor sessions I do have limits to the dresses that can go outdoors - some of them are delicate and only appropriate for the studio setting.

And you don’t have to style the rest of the family alone. Once we find the perfect piece for you or your child, we’ll help build everyone else’s wardrobe around it using pieces you already own or additional options from the closet. It’s one less thing to shop for, one less thing to stress about, and one of our favorite ways to make your session feel like a fully styled portrait experience from the very beginning.

Still Need Help styling your family?

Perfect.

That’s part of the experience.

Send me photos of what’s already in your closet. Text me screenshots while you’re shopping. Bring options into the studio and we’ll put everything together.

If necessary, I’ll even come to your house and help you pull outfits from your own closets.

You hired me to create beautiful family portraits.

That starts long before I pick up my camera.
